What is Chapter 13 Bankruptcy?
Chapter 13 bankruptcy is a debt relief plan for higher income filers who do not qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Chapter 13 allows you to keep your property and belongings, while continuing to pay your debts under a manageable, court-supervised plan.
How Can Filing Chapter 13 Help?
If you are eligible for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, you will get a five year period to pay your credit card debt and similar debts by following a structured payment plan. The goal may not be paying off 100% of your debt, but to pay what you can afford for five years. At the end of the payment plan, the remaining debt is discharged.
After your paperwork is filed, debt collectors will stop harassing you. Collection calls will stop. You are also protected from lawsuits related to your debt.
